I work from home 100% of the time. My flexibility is 100%. My company loves their employees 100%. The expectations for my work-from-home environment... also 100%. And I can safely say, all rules & expectations are broken, 100% of the time.
I was working from home but not from my home office, rather the dining room table (1st broken rule). My husband was on a day off and I didn't remind him that I had a job, M-F from 9am-5pm (2nd broken rule). And like real life, all things happen in 3's... I didn't announce to the entire house that my webcam was being turned on (3rd broken rule).
Let me set the scene for you. I started my meeting which included the president of the company. Let me repeat... the president of the company. NBD. The meeting was moving along quite nicely until... well... it wasn't. Lucky for us (or unlucky depending on how you look at it), my adoring husband got out of the shower and literally walked right up to me (wearing next to nothing), at webcam level, to talk about something. To say we were all dying is an understatement. I was so embarrassed I could've killed him.
The moral of the story, like real life, comes in 3's: (1) Be prepared and know who you'd call to bail you out. (2) Announce to the whole house when the webcam is being turned on. (3) Work for a company that has a sense of humor and rolls with life's punches.
